The “Leica” Look and Classic Film Actions With Photoshop

leica_m8_camera I was trying to give my photos that “Leica” look and was able to find a technique that allows me to do this. You can find this technique in a pretty old article on leica-users.org.

This reminded me of a bunch of Photoshop actions I had discovered a few years back that allows you to mimic different types of film, including Fuji Velvia and Kodak’s now discontinued Kodachrome. For a set of free actions, they’re not too bad. One word of warning, if you’ve got a camera that produces fairly noisy images, the noise may become more pronounced by the actions. Go to Pierre Bize’s Photoshop Actions site to find them.

Canon Zoombrowser Error – ZB Module Stopped Working

If you use the Canon Zoombrowser and have come across the dreaded “ZB Module Stopped Working” error, you might be in luck.

I came across a great write-up on why this problem comes up and how to solve it. In short, the problem appears to be with Windows Vista’s WCS color management system. I was able to fix the problem by simply using the system default setting for my display devices. I never saw improvements in color despite trying different profiles, so no loss.

Color photos in Russia from 1909

I didn’t realize how much work it took to create color photographs in 1909, not that current color print processing is no small feat.

Apparently Russian photographer Sergey Mikhaylovich Prokudin-Gorsky devoloped a process to accomplish this. Take a look at his photographs from a century ago. They look like they were taken just yesterday. Amazing!

Kodak Theatre HD Player

Kodak Theatre

I saw this in an e-mail blast and thought … wow… who’s going to pay $300 for an over designed media reader. Sure it will retrieve photos from a networked PC and play networked music… but so does AppleTV… for less!

Kodak didn’t think this thing through…. products that cost far less have failed. Even at a lower pricepoint, it really doesn’t provide any sort of additional value other than making a HD television an oversized digital photo frame.

Kodak has an incredible amount of value in its brand, but their products are simply sub-par when compared to companies like Sony, Canon and Nikon. They need to concentrate on making better cameras, not overpriced gadgets.

Kodak could provide more value by:

  • It had a large harddrive, say 1 terabyte for transferring photos and video from your digital camera / media
  • Cheaper
  • Provide better value — tie to the Kodak Gallery service as a value add (and an upsell for that matter). I’m thinking a better implementation of .Mac… err…. sorry… MobileMe. Sychronized backups with an online service with an option to purchase prints through a single interface. With no storage limits for their premier service and their terms of service, talk about auto backup galore!
  • Connect to other photo services, allowing file uploading to Flickr, Photbucket, etc….
  • Provide a social networking option to Kodak Gallery to retrieve photos from friends and family (it’s kind of there now, but is nowhere near social)

Just some thoughts….

San Jose Skyline Photo on CreaTV – San Jose Community Channel

I just gave permission for the use of one of my photos for a video spot on CreaTV… In the past, the photo was also used by CNN… kinda cool, eh.
